More than 80% of milk in Ukraine is produced by smallholders who are leaving with less than 100 euros per month. These micro farmers are missing basic knowledge to improve their milk quality and productivity, on top of that they do not have access to credit for activity development. Danone’s global strategy on milk sourcing is to foster the transition from individuals production to services cooperatives production and further to cooperative farms.
Danone Ukraine with the NGO Heifer International and SOCODEVI (Société de coopération pour le développement international) are engaging the step 2 of The Ukraine Milk Communities project (creating services cooperatives cf. Ukraine Milk Communities project) launched in early 2010 through a Cooperative Learning and Production Farm. This farm will serve as a learning centre providing agricultural know-how to small farmers community and it will support services cooperatives on genetic and feeding. It will also be a possible model for medium size farms and should contribute to local agriculture transformation with sustainable value creation engaging local institutions in this transformation.
